August is not the only month for breastfeeding awareness. At Makhzoumi Foundation, every month is dedicated for this important public health issue.
Breastfeeding is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a key measure to ensure the health of mothers and children. The latest guidelines recommend all infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life and receive nutritionally adequate and safe complementary foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond.
In continuous support of those recommendations and guidelines, Makhzoumi Foundation and the Lebanese American University (LAU) school of nutrition hosted an awareness session for women, where nutrition students explained about breastfeeding and its benefits. Knowledge was spread about the reasons to breastfeed and the challenges with an explanation about Infant and Young child feeding (IYCF) all along.
Women shared their stories, and special tips and tricks were spread to encourage the will of new mother to breastfeed their babies. At the end, the attendees were given some vitamins for pregnant women, and hygiene kits for newborns.
