Cancer and cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Due to lack of specific symptoms, it is important that people limit their risk factors and undergo appropriate early screening test annually.
Colorectal cancer, which affects one part of the large intestine due to abnormal growth of cells that have the ability to attack and spread to other organs in the body, is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world and is the third most common cancer in Lebanon. Signs and symptoms of the disease include the presence of blood in the stool, change in bowel movement, weight loss and feeling fatigue all the time.
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Association (SAID NGO), held an awareness session in collaboration with Makhzoumi Foundation that supports sustainable development goal number 3 (SDG3) by ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all ages.
65 participants attended a session presented by two physicians from the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), Dr. Samer Doughan and Dr. Mahmoud Othman both specialized in gastro-intestinal diseases and surgery.
The session presented a briefing about colon cancer, highlighting on the importance of the screening that should be done yearly like mammography that boosts cure rates. Also, participants had the chance to undergo a free FIT test at Fouad Khoury’s hospital which is a very accurate assessment that detects the disease in its early stages.
